Lightning – Equine Storyteller
Lightning’s Intro Story
Lightning was born on a farm in Ohio. Her mother was a registered Tennessee Walking Horse, but her owners did not realize she was pregnant when she came to their farm. The previous owners insisted she had not been with any stallions while she was at their farm. They suspected the transporter, but he stated there was no way she could have been bred on his watch.
So Lightning was a surprise, although a delightful one. She was born during a fierce spring storm, and Lightning was the name her mother gave her. The people at the farm called her mother ‘Melody’, and called Lightning ‘Lyric.’ But people often change horses names, as we shall see. Throughout her long life, she would always think of herself as Lightning, even when she acknowledged other names given by the humans she lived with.
When our story starts, Lightning is the lead mare and the oldest horse at a fictional rescue farm called “Random Canyon Rehab”. Horses come to Random Canyon Rehab from a variety of situations, mostly bad, to heal and rest. Sometimes they are there briefly. Sometimes they are there for the rest of their lives.
Lightning is the storyteller at Random Canyon Rehab and as her scribe, I will try to relate some of the stories as she has shared them with me.
